Meteor Shower Monday http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/081204-leonids-meteor-shower-2009.htmlThe Leonid meteor Shower is supposed to be especially cool this year, peaking on Monday but even last night there was some action. Anyone have suggestions as to where to go to watch it? Preferably something that includes: Accessible at night (so no private property/public parks with limited hours, etc) A place to park a car Open skies Minimal lights around (street lamps, buildings and so forth) Suggestions? |

All-knowing people of Gville, I think this might be the first and last time I ever get to ask this question: If for one night money wasn't a consideration - where in Gainesville would you eat? (I am a vegetarian but my husband is not - a place that is strictly vegetarian is fine but if it serves meat the place should also have something good for a veggie to eat) Thanks! |

So yeah...
I know this gets asked alot around here, given the still-bad state of the economy, but does anyone know of any good job opportunities for students? I've got experience as a cashier, with data entry, in a call center (although I'd rather not...), customer service in general, and I'm skillful with a computer. Politics major here. I'd rather something semi-permanent rather than just Christmas season but I'll take anything. Ideally like 10-14 hours a week, although more during the winter/spring breaks. Thanks guys! |

a choice quote (from my guru, kevin marshall)
"In hopes of protecting our emotions, we build brick walls in every direction to all who have the potential to harm us. For a while this is an act of power, until the day that we look at our life and realize we've built a mighty prison cell around us which limits our movement. The only way out is to jump head first into our raw emotions - the ones we're scared to feel." |

Time as Methodology Hey lovely people! Things are looking up for Alethe! (First of all, Alethe is the new name of the monsterband formerly known as Liar Liar Cross On Fire. Add us asap on www.myspace.com/aletherevealed) We're releasing our new record in january probably! It's going to be called "A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of the Light", and will be released on Apollon Records. In februari, we'll tour Europe together with Fehler (An amazing sludge/core band),and next wednesday, we're playing in Amsterdam together with Bone Awl, a fucking harsh blackmetal band. This is our first show ever with a "proper"blackmetal band, and I really hope that this will launch us into obscureness. It was always difficult to get shows outside of the social circles, and now suddenly I was called for this show by someone who digged our music. AWESOME! This will be our first show as a quintet! After two years of harsh noise, we kinda knew that an extra guitarist was kinda needed to bring somewhat more texture to the sound, and luckily Demian, guitarist of Fehler and banjo-player on our record, was really siked to join us. The first sessions were cool, but when we played Non Timetis Messor for the first time with Demian, I lost it. Amazing. Be there! Speaking about losing it, this tuesday, I went to the movie "Bright Star"with Lydia, about the life and love of the poet John Keats. A really impressive movie, good acting, beautiful pictures, endearing storylines and the ending was a reading of the poem Ode to a Nightingale by the actor who played John Keats. I'm not completely sure why, but I suddenly found myself in tears, listening to the poem. It touched something. Go see this movie. xox Current Mood: head hurtsCurrent Music: Bad Religion- Shattered Faith |

Best vegan meals in town?
First off, thanks to everyone that replied to my post about hair cutters. Very helpful! That said, I have another question: what are the best vegan meals in town? My husband and I are trying out a vegan or close to vegan diet for a while (damn China Study book!) and are looking for stuff to try -- especially since he's been very much a carnivore up till now. We've already tried Satchel's, Karma Cream, and Book's Inc., though we're open to other recommendations there -- despite the fact that the stuff we tried at all three places was AWESOME! If you're curious, at Satchel's we had vegan cheese pizza with banana peppers, spinach, basil, garlic, and carrots; at Karma Cream we had triple chocolate, cookie dough, and green tea ice cream; and at Book's Inc. we had carrot cake and a chocolate cupcake. Yeah, I know, not the healthiest vegan diet yet but it's transitional right now. And I've also eaten some great vegan meals at SaBaBa, too, even when I wasn't really trying to eat vegan. Knowing what restaurants have a good selection of vegan options would be great, but I'd also be interested in good vegan meals at restaurants that aren't really known for being vegan-friendly (even if they include off the menu options). And if you want to share any recipes to try at home, that'd be much appreciated, too! |

Thought some of you might be interested. From my Gainesville Food Blog: The Red Table Bar and Grill, located inside the Holiday Inn on University and 34th, has become Beef O'Brady's. The Red Table was formerly the Dill Deli and, of course, was the site of the last Denny's in Gainesville, circa 2005. Signage on the outside has been changed to represent the takeover, and the Holiday Inn's website represents the change as well. http://www.theuniversityhotel.com/Red_Table_Bar___Grill.html |

I know this isn't Gainesville related, but...
Okay Gainesvillians, make some high school football players dream come true! I teach at Keystone Heights High School, which is 35 minutes northeast of here, in the southern-most part of Clay County. It's a rural 7-12 school that doesn't get much attention. It's also the only title-I high school in Clay County, which means most of our students are low-income and on free/reduced lunch. Sometimes sports is the only thing that keeps these kids in school and keeps their grades up (no 2.0=no play, no excuses). This week is our homecoming, and we have a chance to have Channel 4 come out and cover our game Friday night as their game of the week! This means SO much to our varsity football players, since many of them have college dreams, and being in Keystone, no one notices our football program much, even though we do have a few spectacular players; our team is so small, most guys play both sides of the ball! Please vote at the following Web site and help us stay ahead of Fleming Island High School, which is in a very affluent area of Orange Park and gets a LOT of attention (as well as funding from the county...) Click on Game of the Week on the right hand side, and choose Interlachen at Keystone Heights. You can vote as many times as you want, up til 11pm tomorrow. Oh, and pass the word on! Thanks! http://www.news4jax.com/highschool/index.html |

Anybody know of a good bakery? Needn't be an Italian one or anything, just a good, old fashioned bakery. Rainbow cookies, croissants, cakes, breads, etc. I'm not taking Alberton's or Publix, though. Thanks! Google is failing right now. |

ISO dog walkin spots
hey there! i'm looking for a dog friendly place to take my aussie on a little nature adventure. we're looking for something free (ie. state parks and the like) and something that follows or comes upon some sort of water. we aren't looking for swimming, just really enjoy the company of water on our walks :) we've been to the alfred a ring park and i know that sometimes follows a little stream. is that the best we're going to get as far as water is concerned here in gainesville? i don't mind a small bit of extra travel for a really good nature trail but something local would be best. any ideas? thanks!! Infant childcare
Hi there! My husband and I are expecting our first child in late January, and I will be returning to work after my maternity leave. Any recommendations on infant childcare in Gainesville? I am particularly interested in getting recommendations on in-home childcare providers, as they seem to be harder to find than the big facilities that everyone seems to know. Thanks... |
